Engagement & scroll
For each page, the tracker measures how long the visitor actually engaged with it and how far they scrolled. It sends both as an engagement event, linked to the page's pageview. This feeds time on page, scroll depth and bounce rate.
How it is measured
- Engaged time counts only the time the tab is visible and focused. A page left open in a background tab doesn't count. Each measurement is capped at 30 minutes.
- Scroll depth is the deepest point reached, as a percentage of the page height.
When it is sent
The measurement is sent when the visitor:
- hides the page: switches tab, minimises the window, or closes or leaves the page;
- or navigates to another page of a single-page app.
To avoid noise, it is only sent when the visitor scrolled further, or engaged for at least 3 seconds since the last one.
Configuration
Engagement has no option and is always on. It needs no cookie and no extra request while the visitor reads.
